Saturn, Karma & Mastery

IMG_3719.jpeg

I associate the elemental medicine of Metal with the archetype of Saturn.

In Astrology, Saturn tends to get a bad rap.
His energy can feel heavy and foreboding.
Saturn is the energy of Justice.
He’s the Great Karmic Leveller.

I often hear karma equated to an almost punitive force,
that punishes us for our misdeeds
– an interpretation that feels closer to the more moralistic lens of Christianity.

But in its essence, karma is the collective momentum of our past choices;
And so often, the choices of those that came before us.
The momentum of choices that have echoed inter-generationally.

Yes, these include conscious choices.
But so often, these are choices we make unconsciously - when we act from a place of woundedness.
Often from wounds inflicted upon us.

When we make choices from a place of woundedness, their effects create ripples, not just in the lives of those around us, but primarily within ourselves.Over time these ripples wear upon our perceptions;
The way we see ourselves and the world around us;
Etched patterns of feeling, thinking and responding.
So each time we are faced with an opportunity to turn left instead of right, we find ourselves swimming against the swelling tide of past choices.And that moment of choice becomes harder to perceive.

But the thing with Saturn is,
She will always present us with another choice.
Another chance.

What does this look like?

It can look like hitting the same brick wall over and over again,
feeling as though we are constantly obstructed in our ability to move forward in life.

But rather than viewing this as a kind of punishment,
What if we recognised the profound grace?
The grace in continually being presented with the opportunity to try again;
In being continually gifted with an opportunity for growth and healing.

Saturn will ensure we return to these edges,
Until we find ways to transcend them.
This is why she also represents Mastery.

We each have a unique Saturn placement in our natal charts.
It speaks to the areas of life where we are being called into continual growth.
Growth through challenge and oft adversity.
And through this, it speaks to our accumulated wisdom;
Our potential for great Mastery.

Often this potential is difficult for us to recognise.
Because of the continued challenges in this area of our lives, we may go through seasons of overwhelm or perceived failure.

In my natal chart, Saturn resides in my 6th house.
The 6th house is known as the house of the everyday.
It governs our daily rhythms – our work, duties and responsibilities.
It represents our service to others; Those that we care-take.
Equally, it represents the care that we show ourselves.
As such, it is also known as the house of health.

I feel my challenges within this house have been reflected through my journey of Mothering,
through seasons alone.
Never more so than now, as I find myself caretaking three children and running a household on my own.

Some days I can’t help but feel the sheer weight and impossibility of it.
How to meet everyone’s needs whilst still finding a space for my own?

The every-day has been the altar by which I’ve found myself on my knees, again and again.’
And thus, it's my continued source of wisdom and growth.
The place where I find constant reverence and inspiration.

It demands that I pursue mastery over my time and energy,
And the ways I tend to the energy of our home.
It demands I honour my own recipe for vitality,
Each and every day.

Learning to empower the archetype of Saturn in my 6th house has helped immensely.
It’s helped me to recognise the every-day, as a potent interface for life’s expansion.

To close out the Season of Metal, I’m offering mini-readings centred around Saturn, Purpose and Challenge.
